Dialectics of Strangers’ Vision: Iran

Iran is a kind of ideal “other” modern Western civilization. Iran has oil, prohibitions, vastness and wealth, but, to put it frankly, it is not the wealthiest, not the vastest, not the most closed and not the most oil-rich country in the world. A unique feature of Iran is its degree of “otherness”. Aside from religion and conflict with the US, we know that in Iran there used to be miniature paintings and poetry and now there are great film directors. And lots of other clichés. The internationally-recognised Anglo-Saxon-Protestant protocol is not so different from Iranian protocol in terms of its external manifestations. However, Iran is seen through the perspective of international news as the centre of the world’s problems.
