The group exhibition of winners and awardees of the International Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA) has just finished its work at the Somerset House Gallery in London. This contest has been held for the 5th time already. This year over 112 000 pictures from 171 countries have been submitted, which is the maximum since the contest was first organized. Rena Effendi is among the awardees. She has won the third place in the “Still life” professional category with her project “Chernobyl, Still Life In The Zone”. The absolute winner of the SWPA 2012 is Mitch Dobrowner, who represented his black & white landscapes, showing wind- and thunder-storms over American states. Every year this Award becomes more and more popular due to its democratic basis, as the participation is free of charge and both professional and nonprofessional photographers have a wide range of categories to choose, and because of a valuable prize: this year the winner has been awarded with a statuette L’Iris d’Or, $25 000, modern photographic equipment by Sony, and was announced as a member of the prestigious World Photographic Academy. The Academy has united the leading photographers and photography experts of the World, and Rena Effendi is also a member there. During the press briefing the South African photographer Jodi Bieber, one of the jury members in 2012, mentioned that in her opinion the photojournalism is evolving into the artistic field today, and the works of photojournalists seem more and more natural in galleries and museums. “I don’t think that news photographers can self-actualize in the Gallery business,” – Jodi specifies, “but they can participate if they create their own projects with many conceptual messages, which can be interpreted differently” (the quote from Foto&Video №8, 2012, on sale since the end of July).
