Alnis Stakle at the Cesis Art Festival, Latvia

Cesis Art Festival 2011, the biggest modern art festival in Latvia, was opened on July 23 in Cesis (Latvia); the festival program includes theater and cinema, concerts and exhibitions. A personal exhibition by Alnis Stakle, an artist from the Photographer Ru agency and gallery, will be held as part of the event.

The Cesis Art Festival was founded in 2007 with the goal of transforming Cesis into the regional capital of modern art (before this point, the city was already the site of organ festivals, summer, open-air exhibits of watercolor art, etc.). Its extensive program gives the opportunity to get acquainted with the most significant events in Latvian cinema, theatre, music, fine art and photography during the previous year; the festival also includes an international program.

Alnis Stakle is taking part in Interstice (“Gap” in French), Inese Baranovska’s curatorial project, which is dedicated to the modern art of the Baltic region. It will include works from the Ilgas series, which was shot in the summer of 2010 at the Daugavpils University women’s dormitory.

The festival will last till September 24; the program of events can be found at organizer’s site.

Alnis Stakle’s photographs from the Ilgas series can be seen here.
