On January 25, 2012 at Nailya Alexander Gallery, New York the exhibition Underground: Russian Photography 1970s – 1980s opens. There will be presented the gelatin silver prints by Nikolay Bakharev, Boris Smelov, Yuri Rybchinsky, Igor Moukhin and other famous Russian photographers.
Various nonconformist social and cultural sentiments had a great impact on the evolution of Russian photography of that period. Amateur groups which were being created laid the foundation for a new generation of photographers. They photographed forbidden topics for a small circle of people. This underground world manifested rejection of official conventions of the reality.
Thus, in Nikolay Bakharev’s frank portraits of people photographed either at picnics or apartments Nikolay Bakharev explores the underlying morals of a Soviet province.
The exhibition will run till March 24, 2012
